What is the purpose of HiddenSelf.com?
The goal of HiddenSelf.com is to create a friendly and honest atmosphere for
women about sex. We want visits to our site to be as noninvasive as possible
this means no steamy banner ads, no pop-up ad windows, no in-your-face photos.
The visitor should feel welcome to browse though anything without having to
worry about what they might see. For that reason, items on the site will be rated
for severity so that, for example, a woman expecting a romantic story gets
exactly that.
We are being very careful to put only reviewed stories and products on the
site which means you don't have to wade through thousands of stories to
find a good one each one has been hand picked and reviewed by our staff
(um hem, me).
There is more to HiddenSelf.com than just stories and soon, merchandise
we are including anything we are interested in, and wish we could find in one
place. We are adding features weekly advice, entertainment, tips and tricks,
opinions, and even a word or two from the opposite sex.
Because the site is always evolving, come back often and see what we've added.
And if you'd like to contribute yourself, just
fill out the feedback form with any story or other ideas you have.
I am working to get toy manufacturers to be more accountable for the quality
of their products, so if you have a product you'd like to comment on (the good
and bad), fill out my toy feedback
form, and help me only sell GOOD toys.
Why did you start this site?
I love sex. I love almost everything
about it reading, writing, talking about it, and of course
having it. So when I realized that even I, the impossible-to-embarrass
Jenn, was too embarrassed to go into an adult video store to rent
movies, I set out to find a way to give myself and others a way
to shop without being embarrassed.
My friend and I started out making a mail catalog for women, half
catalog, half erotic stories (to give women a reason to keep the
catalog around). But why spend the money on a printed catalog, when
the web gives you the ability to have continually updated stories
and merchandise? And the site was born.
It has been an interesting adventure since then. I searched to
see what was already out there, and I was shocked to see how one-sided
the adult content was. Do the providers not know that women are
as interested in sex than men? (If not more?)
And so it began...
I moved from Austin, Texas to sunny San Diego, California at the
end of September 2001, into
a webcam house of all places. The move made it easier to work
on the site (the laws are much friendlier here, and this is where
the industry is concentrated).
After coming back from my first Burning Man, I realized that after a year on cam, I wasn't so keen on having my life on sale for $9.95 a month. One of my roommates (and good friend) and I started the next day looking for a place of our own, which we found the next day, and moved out within the week. It's been a strange time, decompressing both from Burning Man and living on cam at the same time, but both were worth the effort.
Because of Burning Man, I met a man who volunteered to mentor me on how to
run a business, make it successful, and not lose my mind. Ever since our first
meeting just after Burning Man 2002, it's been all HiddenSelf, all the time. Since
the new year, I've stopped doing freelance work (distracting work), and have started
doing home parties and put my
own store online. And the adventure continues...
Can I contribute to the site?
If you've been wondering, "Where has this site been all my
life?" and would like to help, please e-mail me. I am looking
for both erotic stories and entertainment/advice writers.
I don't want to do this all myself...and I don't want this to just
be my view on what women want in a site I want it to be as
diverse as possible. Help me help women "explore their hidden
selves. "
I want this site to be a great place for both writers and readers,
and am making every effort to make them both feel at home. At this
point we are not paying for stories...but are not charging for them
either. I am hoping to feature stories with multiple parts to "release"
weekly these will be paid for, because I hope to make them
a draw for the site.
I am actively seeking all types of stories...romantic, sexual but
not explicit, and explicit. I cannot (and don't want to) publish
any stories involving minors, rape, bestiality, or other illegal
acts. I reserve the right to edit all stories for grammar, spelling,
and readability.
I am working on creating a more detailed information page, please
check back soon if you are interested, or contact
me if you have any questions. And, of course, all correspondence
will be confidential.
Was that you in the Austin American Statesman?
Yup. I was lucky enough to be featured in Austin's local paper,
on the cover of their technology section "Technopolis"
in March of 2001. Unfortunately, at the last minute, the managing
editor had the writer pull all of our site names from the article,
leaving anyone interested in finding the site lost.
You can read the article here.
What is this I hear about you being on a
SXSW panel?
I was asked to be on a panel March 12, 2001 for Austin's
SXSW Interactive Festival, called "Porn to Run: Lessons
from the Adult Internet." I had some great company, entrepreneur
Danni Ashe (DannisHardDrive.com),
Amanda (AmandaCam.com) and
John Styn (CockyBastard.com),
moderated by Jodi Sax (LawGirl.com).
It went well, though I might have learned more from the other panelists
than the audience did.
I got asked back for the SXSW 2002 to be in a Peer Discussion Group
with Eric Durchholz (of PlanetConcrete.com fame), and had the distinct
honor of going to SXSW Interactive with my former panelist, now
roommate Halcyon. What a difference a year can make
I went
from stuttering around the cockybastard
to borrowing his fishnets.
And on British Television?
Yep, thats me too
a Channel 4 film crew came and filmed
us during Globalgasm. Their
special is to air July 22, 2002, and we are hoping to land a copy
of the tape.
And on MTV?
Not going to jinx it so close to its release, but the cam
house I live in was filmed March 2001 for a show about the
future of sex. It has gone through so many edits and delays
that they came back a few months ago for an update (lucky me, otherwise
I wouldnt have had a chance to be in it!). It finally aired July 4, 2002, and all footage of me ended up on the editing room floor.
